Our Story: How the DeedaLu Came to Be
The question I hear most often is, “What’s a DeedaLu?”
The answer starts with a simple crochet hook, a stubborn streak, and an important lesson about self-worth.
When I first learned to crochet, I had every intention of creating the adorable animals I saw online. There was just one problem—I couldn’t seem to follow a pattern. Whether it was impatience, lack of skill, or a little bit of both, my creations never turned out the way they were supposed to. Instead of perfect replicas, I ended up with quirky, one-of-a-kind little creatures. They weren’t flawless, but they were full of personality, charm, and character.
Around the same time, my niece was preparing to leave for college. Like so many young people—and honestly, so many adults—she was feeling overwhelmed by expectations. She worried about making friends, finding her place, and becoming the person she thought she was supposed to be. She compared herself to others and focused on everything she believed she lacked. She criticized her appearance, wished she were different, and measured herself against impossible standards.
During one of our conversations, I finally told her something that had been on my mind for a long time:
“There is literally no one else like you, so there is no one to compare yourself to.”
No one has her exact combination of kindness, empathy, intelligence, humor, resilience, creativity, and beauty. No one has lived her experiences or sees the world through her eyes. She is entirely unique—and that uniqueness is her greatest strength.
That realization collided with those imperfect little crochet creatures sitting on my table.
They weren’t identical. They weren’t perfect. They didn’t match any pattern.
And that was exactly what made them special. That’s when the idea for the DeedaLu was born.
The name itself came from a happy accident. My dog’s name is Aziza Lu, which means precious light, and over time I created countless nicknames for her. One of them was “DeedaLu.” When it came time to give these little creatures a name, it felt perfect—playful, unique, and unlike anything else.
Today, every DeedaLu represents a simple but powerful message:
You do not need to become someone else to be worthy.
In a world filled with filters, comparisons, and pressure to fit in, a DeedaLu is a reminder to celebrate what makes you different. The traits you sometimes question—the things that make you stand out—are often the very things that make you extraordinary.
We spend so much time seeking approval from others when the most important approval is our own. We are often loved, appreciated, and valued more than we realize.
The challenge is learning to see ourselves that way, too.
